Postdoctoral Associate

This is a unique opportunity to join the Chen lab, a new core faculty laboratory at the Broad Institute that is developing methods for studying differences in developing novel genomic tools for studying the spatial organization of tissues. We operate in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment, with ample learning and growth opportunities as we build our team.

We are pioneering tools to perform genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic assays in situ. These readouts are combining microscopy and next generation sequencing readouts, revealing a wealth of information about how the genome, epigenome, and transcriptome are organized in the spatial organization of cells and tissues, and how they work together to produce complex cellular behaviors.

About the Position:

We are looking for an exceptionally creative and self-motivated postdoctoral associate to join us in developing new methods for studying gene expression across space and time. The successful candidate will collaborate with internal and external groups to solve challenging biological problems. The work will be multi-disciplinary, combining molecular biology and microscopy and will work closely with immunologists, computational biologists, chemists, and engineers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for development, validation, and optimization of novel in situ transcriptomic tools or tools to look at dynamic interactions between cells

  • Development of novel single cell, spatially resolved transcriptomic methods

  • Determine the feasibility and makes recommendations regarding the acquisition and/or implementation of new technologies, reagents, and assay procedures

  • Use demonstrated scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities

  • Regular interaction with internal and external contacts, including Broad scientists, collaborators, students, postdocs, and external clinicians and industry leaders.

The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group names Dr. Fei Chen as a 2017 Allen Investigator

Dr. Fei Chen is honored to receive one of five Allen Distinguished Investigator awards, a $1.5 million grant given over a 3 year period to early-stage researchers who are leading innovative fields in bioscience.

Dr. Chen and Dr. Buenrostro, who also is a recipient of an ADI award at the Broad Institute, are collaborating to develop novel technologies in the field of epigenetics. These tools aim to enable direct visualization of the architecture of the genome and sequence individual regulatory elements within cells. The goal of this project is to gain a further understanding of how spatial organization of the genome is regulated, and to ask new questions about how changes in the epigenome lead to changes in both normal and disease cell types directly within tissues.
